Human Animal

I've started working on a new series of photographs which, like my earlier works, use paper adhered to the subject's face to portray an idea and transform the person without the use of digital manipulation.

I want to create a collection of portraits that are almost animal-like in appearance, creating a confusion between what is real and what is not. For these images the paper has been cut very finely to give a likeness to fur. However, the texture of paper brings out a sharper look, more like a form of armour.

Some out-takes from a recent photo shoot for Dunedin-based printmaker Jenny Chen.

Chen will be working from these images for her next exhibition of prints, which focus on her identity as a Chinese woman living in New Zealand. The makeup for the shoot is based on traditional Chinese opera-style masks and makeup which is very dramatic and expressive.

Series of works taken under the concept of "anti-portraiture", taken in studio using an old large format camera (with 4 x 5" size negatives). The shallow depth of field was achieved with the large format camera, which has a tilt-shift lens that changes the focal point and depth.

"Paper-Thin" 2009 Part 1

The work is a series of photographic portraits taken with medium format slide film in a twin-lens reflex camera, showing various emotions, maladies and violence with the use of coloured paper placed on the human body. Replacing important parts of the scene with paper reduces the event to the level of a cartoon, making it ok for the viewer to stare, even to laugh.

Diseases and psychological illnesses make people uncomfortable, and the most common way of dealing with this is to look away. With these images, the viewer is invited to stare, only to realise too late what it is they are really looking at.

The series can be split into two parts; cartoons and medical imagery. The entire series is going to be displayed in the "Site '09" exhibition at the Otago Polytechnic School of Art. The following photographs are the cartoon-derived works.

From the tree works I became interested in using paper in my works. I was looking at children's stories, and the violence inherent in them, which doesn't seem to shock children. These photographs are intended to be subversive- they portray something violent or things that make us uncomfortable, but in a way that doesn't shock the audience.

"Light On The Dark" was a series of black and white photographs I exhibited at the Temple Gallery, Dunedin in 2008.

The aim of the works was to shed light on the dark side of psychological states, through different forms of portraiture. The face and human form is blurred, distorted and fragmented in various ways to try and express the psychological in a physical way. The photographs were produced using 120 film in a twin-lens reflex medium format camera, with the images being printed by hand in the darkroom.
